SSC Typing Speed Requirement: CHSL, CGL and Skill-Test Guide

There is no single SSC typing requirement

SSC recruits for many different posts, so one speed figure does not apply to every examination. The test may be a Hindi or English typing test, a Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), a stenography skill test, or no typing test at all.

Always identify the examination, post and skill-test module before choosing a practice target. The latest official notice and admit-card instructions are the final authority.

SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA

The SSC CHSL 2024 notice specified a 10-minute typing test for LDC and JSA posts. Candidates opting for English needed 35 WPM, while candidates opting for Hindi needed 30 WPM. The notice equated these speeds to approximately 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour respectively.

The medium selected in the application is important. Prepare in that medium and use the keyboard or input method specified in the current instructions.

SSC CGL uses a different skill-test model

Do not copy the CHSL WPM target directly into a CGL plan. Recent CGL examinations include a Data Entry Speed Test module, and its task is described in key depressions and a fixed time rather than as a normal Hindi-versus-English typing test.

Check the CGL notice for the posts to which the computer and data-entry modules apply, the qualifying standard and any exemptions or compensatory-time rules.

Stenographer is not an ordinary typing test

SSC Stenographer assesses shorthand dictation and transcription. The shorthand speed and transcription time are different from a keyboard WPM target. Prepare with stenography-specific material instead of relying only on ordinary paragraph typing.

Similarly, do not assume that MTS, GD or another SSC examination includes typing unless the notice for the relevant post explicitly lists a skill test.

Understand WPM, KDPH and accuracy

WPM is a convenient practice measure, while KDPH counts key depressions over an hour. Official notices may describe how one is converted to the other. Accuracy remains critical because mistakes can affect evaluation even when gross speed looks high.

Use the calculation and error rules stated by SSC for that examination. A practice website’s net-WPM formula is useful for training but may not reproduce every official deduction rule.

A practical four-stage preparation plan

Begin with a baseline test in the required medium and format. Then build layout familiarity, remove repeated errors and finally simulate the complete test duration.

• Stage 1: confirm the post, test type, medium and official target.
• Stage 2: practise difficult keys, words, numerals and punctuation.
• Stage 3: complete short timed tests and review every error category.
• Stage 4: take full-duration mocks using the same layout and no interruptions.

What to record after each mock test

Record the passage length, duration, gross speed, displayed accuracy, net score and common errors. Compare a weekly average rather than a single best attempt.

If gross speed rises but the net result remains flat, reduce speed slightly and fix the repeated errors. If accuracy is stable but speed is low, use short speed bursts followed by an accurate full test.

Exam-day checklist

Read the skill-test notice again before reporting. Confirm the medium selected in your application, reporting time, identification documents and any special instructions. At the workstation, check the input language and follow the invigilator’s directions before typing.

Start at a controlled pace. A steady ten-minute performance is more useful than a very fast first minute followed by repeated corrections.
